Grenier home almost entirely self-sufficient

I love stories like this, it shows how inexpensive it can be to reduce your energy usage enough to not worry about the grid. However, the Canadian government requires them to be on the grid for safety reasons. Of course, just because you have to be attached doesn’t mean you have to use it.

The Cornwall Standard Freeholder - Ontario, CA

About three years ago, Grenier decided to invest in alternative energies in an effort to save money, become more self-reliant, and do his part to help the environment.

“We were tired of not being able to do anything like cook, and things like that,” said Grenier.

“And plus, this is a lot better for the Earth.”

He started out by having a company from Montreal install two solar panels outside his 650 sq.-ft. trailer to power his hot water heater.

The difference in his heating bill was small but noticeable, and before long Grenier had added seven more panels and a wind generator to his spacious Tenth Street East backyard, this time from his son Alain Grenier’s solar power business, Ecological Energy Solutions, located here in Cornwall.
