Series of blunders turned the plastic bag into global villain

I highlight this because news like this can make people give up and look at those of us in the green movement with suspicion. While plastic bags might not be as big of a danger to marine life as previously claimed, they’re still garbage, and they aren’t biodegradable. It’s still a much better idea to use reusable grocery bags, or to recycle the plastic bags as much as you can.

It’s also a good idea that when you try to convince people of your viewpoint, that you stick to the truth instead of wild claims. Someone could claim “I couldn’t trust you about the plastic bags, why should I trust you about any of your other claims?” And then it takes a step backwards.

The widely stated accusation that the bags kill 100,000 animals and a million seabirds every year are false, experts have told The Times. They pose only a minimal threat to most marine species, including seals, whales, dolphins and seabirds.
