Given that most people drink too much sugar anyway, this is a much better use for it.

Researchers at the Saint Louis University in Missouri have developed a fuel cell that runs on any sugar source from soft drinks to tree sap. The fuel cell has the potential to run three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium ion batteries we know and love today.
